Pods 2021-2022

Durham Community Preschool will be continue to operate with pods comprised of 12 or less families and two teachers. Each pod will not interact with the other pod to keep exposure low for teachers and families. Our goal has been to create a safe work environment for teachers and a safe social environment for our families. We are excited to offer another year of valuable, outdoor learning for children for the 2021-22 school year.

Why pods? For us, we chose this programmatic model in July 2020.

We started with these questions:

What do our families need from us?

What do our teachers need from us?

How can we, as a nonprofit preschool, build a bridge between these two?

We put together a group of teachers, parents and Board members to recreate our program. After weeks of discussion, ideas and research, we found the best solution we could among difficult times. We decided to move our program outdoors. We found in the 2020-21 school year that being outside and having a consistent in-person school experience helped support our community during the pandemic. We did not close once due to covid in the 2020-21 school year.  This new model allowed us to stay connected to our values – we are here to serve our families in the best way possible, we want to be a safe and supportive place for teachers to work, and we want to support the social-emotional learning for young children. We are excited to continue this model for the 2021-22 school year!
